About Me
What are you doing here?! I'm really not that interesting... =P Well, since my basic stats are already up to your right above the navigation bar, I'm just gonna talk a little more about my history... which really isn't that exciting either, but in case you're curious. Here goes:
I was born on May 23rd, 1985 in the small town of Manchester, TN. (Oh, funny story- my grandmother told me that when I was born, this man had escaped from the psychiatric ward and was running loose around the hospital. She said it was entertaining. He was completely harmless; just a little crazy. Apparently, he crawled out of a window and managed to scramble onto the roof, where he was finally apprehended. Poor guy). My mother, father (who was in the service at the time), and I all moved to North Carolina, where I was said to have lived for about a year, although I was way too young to remember any of it. My grandfather and grandmother came to see us all the time (again, from what I hear), and after some hard decisions, decided to take me back home with them to Tennessee.
Thus, how I came to live where I still do to this day. Tullahoma's pretty boring- nothing much to see except for some restuarants, Hastings, Wal-Mart, the mall, and the movie theater. Of course, that's small town life for you. I had a good childhood (although in my opinion, they spoiled me rotten), and went through all the basic stages of grade school.
Now, at 20 years of age, I'm going to be a junior at Tennessee Technological University, halfway there to earning my Bachelor's in Music Education. College has been an amazing experience- I feel I've definitely matured from it somewhat, among other life-changing things- and the people there are so nice. I'm thankful I chose that university, because right now I can't imagine myself fitting in anywhere else. But I'll talk more about my life in music in the next section. =P
You see? Nothing really that interesting about my mundane history.
Hobbies
Oh, my gosh- where to begin? lol I'm really more of an "artsy" person when it boils down to it (right side of the brain? I always get them mixed up). Here's some of the things I enjoy doing in my spare time:
Reading- I love books... I attribute that passion to my mom, who also loves to read. I'll read just about anything- mystery, the occasional romance, fantasy, science fiction, etc- but I suppose the topic I enjoy most are retold fairy tales. Maybe I'm still a little girl at heart, but I think it's always neat to take a well-known classic and give it a unique twist. My fav. fairy tale is "Sleeping Beauty," but I haven't really come across any good retellings of it yet. I'll let ya know if I find one. Some of my favorite authors include Robin McKinley, Nicholas Sparks, Jane Austin, Barb & J.C. Hendee, I'd like to actually read a Stephen King book someday. Some good reads I've found are A Walk to Remember, Beauty, The Outlaws of Sherwood, Pride & Prejudice, The Once and Future King... I could go on and on.
Writing- One of my "creative outlets." I've been writing stories for a long time. I'm even co-writing a book with my friend Jasmine that we hope to have published someday. It has a little bit of every genre imaginable thrown into it. If we can make that happen, I'll post a link up. Oh, and in case you're wondering where "Crystal Miller" came from, it's one of my pen names.
Art- I've always been able to draw for as long as I can remember. I used to only want to work on cartoon-characters, but as I got older, I found more joy in drawing from real-life subjecst, especially people. My original life-long goal was to become an animator. I can't tell you enough how much I love cartoons (I probably have just about every animated feature ever made). I took art classes every summer when I was little (ironically at the place I work at now and from my current boss), and I made sure to get into every art class at the high school. However, the older I became, the more music began to consume my life (all you band people know exactly how that feels). Really, I had more potential as a musician than as an artist, so after some soul-searching I decided to give up my life-long dream of becoming an animator so I could give music my all. I still draw from time to time, and I've been trying to sign-up for some studio classes at my college, but they almost always conflict with something I'm required to take for my degree. I never intend to fully give it up, though- besides, I have my whole life ahead of me to enjoy bringing things to life with a pencil and paper.
Music- lol Honestly, I never thought I would eventually end up majoring in music. I was too caught up in my goal of being an animator. I had always considered it just something I did for fun. Whenever there'd be drama in my life, I'd go pick up my flute and just start playing to take my mind off things. When I made the command decision to major in music my senior year in high school (I was under a lot of pressure, especially after placing first at all-state, which completely floored me), I was worried that the fact that I now had to earn a living by my playing was going to take away some of the simple joy of it. Luckily, though, it hasn't, and I'm thankful for allowing myself the opportunity to strive to do better at playing. I can't say that the stress of being a music major has almost caused me to have a nervous breakdown from time to time, but it's things like that that make you stronger, I believe. I'll just say that I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute, and wouldn't take back any of it for the world. Having to learn all the instruments is hard- don't even get me started on piano- not to mention developing aural techniques seemed to take an eternity. I gave my first recital this past spring- wow, what an experience. It was the firs time I've ever stood up in front of a crowd of people (who were literally right in your face thanks to the recital hall), and play for nearly a solid hour. I've never pushed myself, never worked so hard for anything in my life. About a year ago, I invested in a piccolo of my very own. Got a good deal for it, too. I'd always wanted one- I love the sound of a piccolo, it has a very sweet, other-worldly tone to it. Anyway, this section will probably grow larger as I think of more to write.
